The Matrix is a sci if film made in 1999. The following are adapted quotes from the movie changed to what healthcare is going through currently.
Hello, dear doctor. I know you are out there. I can feel you’re afraid. I don’t know the future. I’m not here to tell you how this is going to end. I am going to tell you how it’s going to begin. I will show you what you don’t want to see. A world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice you will have to make.
The insurance companies:
They are the gatekeepers. They are guarding all the money and holding all the power, which means sooner or later, someone is going to have to fight them.
A pharma company negotiates with an instance company.
A pharmacy negotiates with an insurance company.
An employer negotiates with an insurance company.
A solo physician negotiates with an insurance company.
They have all failed.
Where they have failed, we will succeed. We are physicians. We are a group of physicians. We are Privia.
We have to have every physician let go of fear, doubt, and disbelief. The fear that the insurance companies rule our lives. The doubts that the system will never change. The disbelief that we all can’t work together.
There is a difference between knowing that this will all get better vs walking down the path after you create it.
As long as the current system of insurance companies, pharma companies, pharmacies, laboratories exist, the doctor patient relationship will never be free.
Do you actually believe that you are providing better care now than 10 years ago?
Do you actually believe that you are making more money now than 10 years ago?
Do you actually think we are lowering the cost of healthcare compared to 10 years ago?
Physicians can not develop a natural equilibrium with our environment. Other professions do this very well. We try to take everything that the insurance will allow us. Until it is gone, then we find another way to manipulate the insurance company. This is the only way we survive. This is the only we multiply and divide. We learn to code better, we learn to do procedures in the clinic, we join IPAs, hospital systems, ACOs. We are business oriented. We are no better than the individual components of the system that we do not like.
We need to become better at business. We need to work together.
Those are the sounds of inevitability. That is the sound of death working in a solo practice.
There are lot of physicians trying to manipulate the system at the expense of patient quality to make more money and increasing cost of healthcare at the same time. The very physicians we are trying to free are part of this system that is destroying itself.
You will have to make a choice. On the one hand, you will have your practice to think about. On the other, Privia. One of you will die. The choice is up to you.
As soon as you finish reading this, you’ll remember that you don’t believe in any of this crap. You are in control of your own practice, remember. But when you are in deep sleep and alone at night, you will remember that the truth is health care can be bent. Try not to change health care. Don’t think about healthcare at all. The truth is there is no health care. Health care does not change. It is only yourself that has to change.
Then you will realize that you are the one.
