What is A1c? Really?

A1c is used as 3 month average for your sugars.  A1c is actually a protein attached to the red blood cells.  This protein attracts sugars molecules and like pixie dust, it makes the red blood cells fly in the blood stream.  None of this is really true.  Not even the 3 month part.  It’s more like 8 weeks or 10 weeks, not 12 weeks.

We just said 12 weeks because it’s 3 months.  Can you imagine the confusion of having to schedule patients every 10 weeks.  That would be hell for my staff at check out.  But, 3 months, hey, that’s easy.

And for the love of god, it’s not A i c, it’s A1c.  Emphasis on the 1!!

A1c is like Gloum’s ring from Lord of the rings.  My precious. My precious.  That’s all anyone with diabetes ever cares about, it’s their A1c, my precious.

Normal A1c is under 5.5

Diabetes is over 6.5

If you are 5.5 to 6.5, well, you are probably very overweight and on that fast train to diabetes.  So, go see your doctor to stop it or slow it down.  And lose some weight.
